EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
Musical Theatre Productions (MTP) is committed to ongoing work surrounding Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). It is our utmost priority that our stages reflect our diverse city, and all participants feel safe and supported. EDI at MTP looks like:
Pay-What-You-Can ticket pricing offers;
Diverse recruitment practices (i.e. being thoughtful in the communities we invite to audition);
Inclusive audition and rehearsal practices (i.e. ensuring the physical space is accessible to all, looking at non-traditional casting, methods to report and resolve challenges, access to quiet spaces);
Relaxed performances (i.e. reducing volume and special effects, leaving house lights on, etc); and/or
ASL (American Sign Language) interpreted performances.
This is not an exhaustive list, and it’s possible that not everything on this list is part of our initiatives each year.
MTP’S Initiatives
Last updated November 2025
Pay-what-you-can Ticket policy
For the 2025-26 Season, MTP approved a policy requiring shows with a two-week run will offer a Pay What You Can (PWYC) performance on the first Thursday before opening night. This includes Showtune and the (currently unannounced) Spring musical in May.
ASL-Interpreted Performances
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performances benefit the Deaf and hard of hearing community by providing access to theatre, which fosters inclusion and allows for full engagement with the performance. They also benefit the Deaf community more broadly by increasing familiarity and acceptance of Deaf culture.
We have hosted ASL-interpreted performances for our productions of Cinderella (2022), Company (2024), and Blood Brothers (2025). Please see the below clip of a warm-up before the ASL performance of Company, where the interpreters, Taylor and Rhonda, warmed up too!
Relaxed Performances
Relaxed performances were initially designed to make theatre spaces more comfortable and welcoming to any audience members who would benefit from a non-traditional theatre setting.
In a Relaxed Performance, the environment is carefully adjusted to be friendly and informal to make it accessible for anyone. At MTP, you can expect sound levels and lighting effects to be reduced, a pre-show explanation of the plot, access to a low-sensory area if the performance becomes overwhelming, among other accommodations. Vocalizing from audience members, including babes in arms, is permitted. We welcome any patrons who may feel they could benefit from this style of performance.
We have hosted Relaxed Performances for our productions of Cinderella (2022), Company (2024), Big Fish (2025), and Blood Brothers (2025). In 2025, the Board approved a policy to require at least one Relaxed Performance for each show with a two-week run, which will include Showtune and the (currently unannounced) Spring musical in May.
DEI Project with Pillar Non Profit
In 2020-2021, Musical Theatre Productions reflected on how to better understand and enact Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in our organization. With the generous support of a grant from the London Arts Council, MTP partnered with Impact Consulting through Pillar Nonprofit Network to support MTP in nurturing an equity-oriented and inclusive environment and culture, whereby all volunteers and audience members feel safe and supported.
