A letter from the director

You know what's great about doing a cabaret? You get to break the rules. That blockbuster musical you could never afford to do? Take your favorite parts and put them in a cabaret! Want to showcase that song you love but no one's ever heard of? Here's the perfect place! Want to cast singers against character or against type? Don't see why not! Got wacky notions about reframing and reinterpreting well-known classics? Let your imagination run wild!

The Beauty Underneath is, foremost, a Halloween-spirited celebration of the dark corners of the musical theatre canon. But to me, it's a story that reflects its own creation: transformation through transgression. It's about how sometimes, to discover who you really are, you have to break a lot of rules. And how do you navigate a world that says you're becoming a monster, when you're just becoming you?

I'm immeasurably grateful to all the people who've come together to bring our underworld to light—it takes an increasingly-large village to create community art at this scale. Many thanks to our passionate artistic team, our delightful and talented cast, our jammin' band, our industrious crew, our stalwart supporters at MTP and the Grand, our generous sponsors... and of course you, our audience. Nowadays we are surrounded by growing voices demanding to tear down the rights and resources people need to live their most authentic lives—so we greatly appreciate your support in carving out this space where we can, for a moment, unleash.

Henry Truong

Director - The Beauty Underneath
